Chapter 9
(Bella)
No.
It could’ve been anyone. Anyone else. Anyone, but him. She blinked, shaking her head, then looked back. It was still him. She blinked back tears, but more came down her face.
Her concentration had broken, and her disguise melted off, though she was still holding him to the wall.
“No.” He whispered, his voice shaking. They stood like that in shock for what seemed like months, staring at eachother. A memory swept over her.
------
“What’re you writing?” Her little brother begged, tugging at her overalls. Light poured through the dusty windows throughout the old small room painted a light copper. She slapped his hand away. “Go away Will, I’m almost done!” “What part are you at?” Will bugged her again, plopping down on the creaky wooden floors curiously. “Lucy just figured out who murdered Thomas.” Bella replied not looking down at the younger boy, pulling a loose curl behind her ear.
In her story, when Lucy had found out who had murdered Thomas, everything made sense. It all had connected, like puzzle pieces. Lucy remembered all the clues leading to the answer of who killed Thomas Gray.
But this wasn’t her short adventure story she had made when she was nine. No puzzle pieces connected, no flashbacks of clues that he had been Lunar all along.
Nothing made sense. Have I always been this oblivious to obvious clues or hints? She racked her brain for anything, anything that had been said or done that pointed to the truth. Aaron had always been kind, had always wanted to protect her. Not like Lunar. Lunar is evil, cruel, and manipulative. Aaron isn’t like him. It doesn’t add up. Maybe he has a twin brother. An evil twin brother. But no, not Aaron...
The kind boy that had taken her on a date and paid. The boy who let her fall asleep on his shoulder, the one who had let her wrap up his bandages…
The burn marks. All the injuries, all the small bruises. She had made those, she had hurt him. He hurt me too, she thought. She shook her head, regaining focus. She realized it had stopped raining, though the two frozen figures remained wet and frozen.
She eventually flew down slowly, placing Aaron, or Lunar on the ground carelessly, letting him hit the paved alley walk hard. Without another glance at him, she let her feet touch the ground. Once she had touched the pavement, she looked down at her pocket. Bella pulled out the comic, damp and torn, and dropped it on the ground. Stepping on it, she walked back to the dormitory. She, Bella Thompson, was nothing like Lucy Brennings.
------
It had been weeks. Bella had moved out, switching to another dorm with only two other girls. She laid back on the bed, groaning. Her two roommates, Sapphire and Mallory, had bought an old radio that they constantly left on, on the highest volume possible. And of course, the only suitable place for this inconvenient radio would be in the main room, right next to her room. Unlike her old dorm, this dorm had four rooms. A main room, which was painted a seaweed green, held two small clean couches and a dusty coffee table, a bathroom, and two bedrooms. Sapphire and Mallory had already been sharing a bedroom, so they allowed Bella to move into the empty one. Her room was a light yellow, and one small window beside her bed. The bed was small, shoved in the corner. Bella had only been into the other bedroom once, it was freshly painted all the colors of the rainbow and the rest of the room looked like hers.
She got up, walking quietly into the main room only to find Sapphire and Mallory curled up on the couch watching old 90’s sitcoms. Sapphire had radiant dark blue eyes and tan skin with short wispy blonde hair and millions of freckles. Mallory was a short Indian woman with dark brown eyes and long, curly black hair. The two looked over at her as she walked in, both smiling brightly.
“Hello, Bella! Ya want to watch?” Sapphire offered, gesturing toward to other couch. Bella shook her head, faking a smile.
“I’m actually going to go for a walk around campus.” She replied, waving before she unlocked the door and walked out quickly.
